The main aim of Smart Posts System was to identifying appropriate and new technologies that can be used to upgrade existing services, introduce new services, and interface with other government departments for Department of Posts.
The objective was to speed up transmission data without the need of physical movement of documents and reducing the man-hours and costs involved in handling such physical transmissions. Database residing in one server is to provide a totally computerized environment at any post office by standardizing the operating environment and application software to achieve inter-operability, connectivity and single point data entry for access throughout the system as quickly as possible. Smart Posts System enhances speed and efficiency, is user friendly, secure and more versatile. It also enables the integration of front office functions with the back-office in a networked, fire walled, and online environment with in-built connectivity features for data transmission.
The Handheld device runs on the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system and includes GPRS technology for wireless transmission of data captured instantaneously.
GPRS fully enables Mobile Internet functionality by allowing inter-working between the existing Internet and the GPRS network. Any service that is used over the fixed Internet today- File Transfer Protocol (FTP), web browsing, chat, email, telnet- will be as available over the mobile network because of GPRS. Because it uses the same protocols, the GPRS network can be viewed as a sub-network of the Internet with Handheld devices being viewed as mobile hosts. This means that each GPRS terminal can potentially have its own IP address and will be addressable as such.
